Introduction:
Welcome to my blog, where I continue to share the extraordinary journey of walking from Johannesburg (JHB) to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in just 27 days, all in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the reconstruction of Dewede School. In this update, I will recount the challenging days I faced, the incredible support I received, and the final leg of my mission to make a difference.
Days 1-2: Battling Blisters and Rainstorms
The beginning of my journey was met with adversity as I covered an astonishing distance of 70 kilometers in just two days. Unfortunately, this grueling pace resulted in golf ball-sized blisters forming on both of my feet. Despite the discomfort, I found shelter under a bridge, determined to press on.
Days 3-4: Recovery and Sponsorship
Recognizing the severity of my injuries, Heidelberg Lodge graciously offered me accommodation and nourishment, allowing me to recover from my blistered feet. Volkswagen also stepped in, providing support for two days. The generosity of these sponsors provided a much-needed respite, both physically and mentally.
Days 4-5: The Helping Hand of Wild Pear Shak
Continuing my arduous journey, Wild Pear Shak, led by Wynand, sponsored my accommodation and provided nourishing meals. With their support, I found strength amidst the pain and pushed forward, knowing that every step was contributing to the cause.
Days 6-7: Villiers Tourist Hotel and Assistance from Locals
The Villiers Tourist Hotel extended their kindness by providing accommodation during these challenging days. Additionally, a local named Peter offered his assistance, transporting me between Villiers and Warden in his bakkie. These acts of compassion and support buoyed my spirits and propelled me onward.
Days 8-9: Lekker Dux Guesthouse and Mahindra’s Help
Lekker Dux Guesthouse, owned by Linda, welcomed me, allowing me to rest and recharge. Mahindra, represented by Eben, offered invaluable support during the journey from Warden to Harrismith. Their generosity fortified my determination to continue, even in the face of adversity.
Days 10-12: Van Reenen’s Beauty and Green Lantern Hotel
The picturesque landscapes of Van Reenen provided both inspiration and challenge. Green Lantern Hotel graciously sponsored my stay for one night, offering respite amidst the demanding terrain. As I pressed forward, the awe-inspiring scenery renewed my sense of purpose.
Days 14-16: Gratitude in Ladysmith
Reaching Ladysmith, I found solace at Malibu Guest House, sponsored by Linda, and supported by the Lions Club, who provided accommodation and nourishing meals. The community’s kindness and support were heartwarming, reinforcing the importance of our collective efforts.
Days 17-19: Escaping the Heat and VW’s Assistance
Navigating scorching temperatures ranging from 36 to 43 degrees, I encountered the challenges of walking in extreme heat. VW Ladysmith stepped in as a sponsor, providing much-needed support during this arduous phase. Their assistance and encouragement propelled me onward.
Days 20-24: Midlands Meander organized Accommodation and food for this leg.
As I traversed the Midlands, Rocklog Farm, owned by Jurie and Jo, sponsored my accommodation and provided nourishment. Rosetta Hotel, under Carl’s care, extended their hospitality, bolstering my spirits during this demanding leg of the journey.
Days 26-27: Support from Howick and Pietermaritzburg
Chris Papas, the mayor of Howick, sponsored my accommodation for one night, offering respite before my final push. In Pietermaritzburg, the Golden Horse Casino, represented by Maureen, provided a two-night stay at their Bed and Breakfast, nurturing my physical and emotional well-being.
The Last Two Days: Completing the Mission in Kloof
With the end in sight, I walked the final stretch, reaching Kloof and Dewede School, our symbol of hope. The completion of this remarkable 27-day mission was made possible by the unwavering support, sponsorships, and the collective effort of all who rallied behind this cause.
Conclusion:
As I reflect on the extraordinary journey from JHB to KZN, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the sponsors, local communities, and individuals who joined forces to make a lasting impact. Through the trials and tribulations, the blisters and rainstorms, the scorching heat and relentless perseverance, we have come together to rebuild and fix 104 schools and the underprivileged schools in KZN, symbolizing the power of unity, resilience, and hope.
Thank you for being part of this incredible journey, and let us continue to inspire change, uplift communities, and create a brighter future for the students of Dewede School.
