Inside WTTF’s mission to tackle South Africa’s learning poverty – especially for remedial learners – with EdTech at Galway Primary School, Germiston.
World Day of Social Justice is observed on 20 February each year. It encourages us to promote opportunities to eradicate poverty. The United Nations’ (UN) also focuses on the goal of achieving full employment.
A Crisis Growing in Plain Sight
Across every school Walking The Talk Foundation engages with, teachers tell the same story: overcrowded classrooms, a curriculum that moves too fast, and learners who are quietly being left behind.
Those who struggle most – especially children needing remedial support – often fall further back with each passing term. Teachers can see the gap widening, but with 40–50 children per class, giving individualised attention simply isn’t possible.
And while they wait for help, these learners face delays that change the trajectory of their education. Government waiting lists for remedial support can stretch 3–4 years, long enough for the damage to take root during the foundation phase of learning.
The result? A national learning crisis:
- 81% of ten-year-olds in South Africa cannot understand what they read
- SA ranked last out of 57 countries in the most recent PIRLS literacy study
- Children without early intervention are 3× more likely to drop out of high school
- 74% of Grade 3s who struggle with reading never catch up
- 50% of youth in the juvenile justice system have undiagnosed learning difficulties
- Adults with unaddressed childhood learning difficulties report mental health challenges at nearly 60%
- Even the economy suffers: Raising a country’s education index by
Talk about a perfect example of marginalisation and inequality this Social Justice Day!
While these numbers are alarming, they also point to a very clear truth:
This crisis is solvable — with the right help, delivered early, to every child who needs it.
The Power of an AI Personal Tutor — For Every Child
The Power of an AI Personal Tutor — For Every Child
What South African teachers need is a tireless assistant who can sit next to each child, adjust every lesson, and never run out of patience.
Today, that helper finally exists.
AI-driven learning tools are stepping into classrooms as personalised, always-on tutors – assessing each learner individually, adapting lessons instantly, and guiding them gently through their challenges.
Imagine being a Grade 4 learner who struggles with basic numeracy. In a traditional setting, you might quietly hide your confusion while the lesson moves on.
But with adaptive EdTech:
- Your exact level is assessed immediately
- You start at the foundational concepts you missed
- Problems are presented in game-like, confidence-building formats
- Mistakes trigger helpful prompts — not judgement
- Concepts are broken down step by step
- You’re encouraged to try again, and again.
For a child who has spent years feeling “behind”, this kind of learning isn’t just helpful… it’s transformative.
The Model that Leaves No Child Behind
At Galway Primary School, this transformation is already underway.
Their R.I.S.E. Programme — Remedial, Intervention, Support, Education — is rooted in the commitment to “leave no child behind”. With WTTF’s support, the programme is integrating educational software to:
- Fill curriculum gaps
- Strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy
- Identify specific learning needs early
- Provide tailored interventions — not one-size-fits-all worksheets
And the results speak for themselves.
In 2024 alone:
- 294 of 358 at-risk learners progressed successfully to the next grade
- 15 learners were placed in specialised programmes suited to their needs
- And now, Galway is expanding even further…
Introducing the AI-Powered Language & Literacy Lab
This dedicated learning space will support over 1,000 students, giving every child access to technology that adapts to them — not the other way around.
This is how the cycle breaks.
This is how belief grows.
This is how futures change.
More Than Marks — A Chance to Believe Again
Over and above building and equipping an EdTech centre, WTTF and Galway are inciting a quiet revolution in confidence.
Because when a child finally understands a concept, they’ve battled with for years, something powerful happens:
- Shoulders drop
- Eyes brighten
- Confidence returns
- And a quiet voice inside says,
That belief — once uncovered — is something no one can ever take away.
