Walking the Talk Foundation’s 3rd Awareness Walk

Walking the Talk Foundation’s 3rd Awareness Walk

Approximately 28.8km from Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh. See how Walking the Talk Foundation’s first hosted awareness walk mobilised schools and communities for better learning spaces.

A Coastal Walk with a Shared Purpose

On 28 October 2023, the Walking the Talk Foundation took a significant step forward along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. Covering approximately 28.8 kilometres from Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh, WTTF’s third walk marked an important milestone — the first Awareness Walk officially organised and hosted by Walking the Talk Foundation.

More than a physical journey, the walk brought together learners, educators, parents, and community members to truly walk the talk. United by a shared purpose, participants stepped forward to raise awareness and motivate schools to take ownership of improving, equipping, and repairing their classrooms.

A total of 25 participants from three different schools joined the full route, demonstrating commitment, unity, and a collective determination to uplift education in KwaZulu-Natal.

Standing Together for Education

The primary purpose of the walk was to encourage schools to actively participate in creating better learning environments by standing together for a common cause. Led by Walking the Talk Foundation founder, Dale van Blerk, the walk called on schools to commit to building, equipping, and fixing classrooms through awareness, collaboration, and action.

The following schools proudly completed the full 28.8 km walk:

  • Mason Lincoln Special School
  • Parkhill Primary School
  • Vumeletu Secondary School

Each school walked with intention — showing solidarity and determination to improve education for their learners and their communities.

What the Walk Set Out to Achieve

“Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”

The third awareness walk centred on several key objectives, including:

  • Raising awareness and support for an MFP copier for Vumeletu Secondary School
  • Empowering schools to walk for a purpose and take ownership of positive change
  • Motivating learners, educators, and parents to actively participate in school upliftment initiatives
  • Highlighting the challenges faced by schools struggling with infrastructure and resources across KwaZulu-Natal
  • Encouraging teamwork and connection among schools, families, and the broader community
  • Uplifting the morale and spirit of participating schools and learners

Every Step Carried Meaning

The journey from Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh was both physically demanding and deeply inspiring. Along the route, participants supported one another step by step, reinforcing the belief that meaningful change is possible when communities come together around a shared vision. Importantly, the walk included students and teachers with disabilities, whose participation powerfully demonstrated inclusivity, courage, and determination.

The walk became a strong symbol of perseverance, unity, and hope — highlighting not only the resilience of schools striving for better learning environments, but also the importance of creating opportunities where everyone, regardless of ability, can participate and contribute.

Together, the participants showed that lasting change is achieved through collective effort, mutual support, and an unwavering commitment to inclusion.

Backed by Community and Business

As the first hosted awareness walk by Walking the Talk Foundation, the event received exceptional support from local businesses and community partners, helping to make the day a success.

Event support included:

  • Pento Brokers – Financial support and transport assistance
  • Hyundai – Transport support

Sponsor contributions included:

  • Bluff Meat Supply – Sponsored braai packs for participants after the walk
  • Twizza – Sponsored cool drinks
  • Oasis – Sponsored water for the day
  • Glue Devil – Sponsored gift packs for all walkers
  • Sox Footwear – Sponsored 50 pairs of socks for participants
  • Scottburgh Caravan Park – Walking the Talk Foundation concluded the walk at this location and made use of the park’s facilities for rest, recovery, and logistical support.

Each contribution played a vital role in supporting the walkers and strengthening the sense of community behind the initiative.

Walking Forward, Together

Walking the Talk Foundation extends sincere thanks to every sponsor, supporter, participant, and school that took part in the third Awareness Walk. Your generosity, encouragement, and commitment helped shine a light on the urgent educational challenges facing schools across KwaZulu-Natal.

This walk was more than a single event — it was a statement of intent. Together, we continue to walk for a purpose, building stronger schools and creating brighter futures, one step at a time.
