A six-month, 1,250km awareness walk revealed urgent infrastructure and technology needs across 30 schools in KwaZulu-Natal.
February–September 2023
From 5 February to 19 September 2023, Walking the Talk Foundation (WTTF) undertook its second awareness walk along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. Covering approximately 1,250 kilometres, the six-month journey focused on schools severely affected by flooding, as well as long-standing infrastructure challenges impacting learning environments.
The walk followed two main routes:
- Durban to Port Edward
- Durban to Ballito
- Durban surrounds
In total, 30 schools were visited during the journey.
Why This Walk Mattered
The primary objective of the awareness walk was direct, on-the-ground engagement. By visiting schools in person, WTTF was able to engage face-to-face with principals and educators to better understand the daily realities and challenges faced by schools across the region.
Key focus areas included:
- The ongoing impact of flood damage
- Poor and unsafe school infrastructure
- Severe shortages of classrooms
- Limited or non-existent access to educational technology
- Inspiring hope and motivation.
Key Insights From 30 School Visits
Based on visits to the 30 schools, the following needs were identified:
- 15 schools required a combined total of 75 additional classrooms
- 67% of schools required urgent infrastructure maintenance and repairs
- 90% of schools lacked adequate technology to support effective teaching and learning
These findings highlighted both the scale and urgency of infrastructure and resource challenges faced by schools along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.
The Journey in Numbers
Over the six-month period, the awareness walk involved visiting all 30 schools and engaging with more than 60 corporate organisations. These engagements played a key role in raising awareness, building partnerships, and mobilising support aimed at improving learning environments in vulnerable communities.
